Mary Komasa

ALBUM, 2015

Mary's debut album was recorded in 2014 at the LowSwing Studio in Berlin, with Guy Sternberg as producer.  “City of My Dreams” was the first single from the album. It’s an intimate statement, describing the conflict between our memories and reality. Dealing with memory – how we lie to ourselves and how we create fake worlds to escape into – is one of Mary’s artistic obsessions.

Looking for the right environment to visually express the song’s mixture of utopia and melancholic bitterness, Mary decided to reach out to her friends from the NYC alternative art scene. New York – the ultimate, iconic city – created the perfect canvass for the story.
The video was shot on location in spring 2014. It was created by Zbyszek Bzymek, an independent director, producer and video artist. It involved actors, performers and dancers from the famous Wooster Theatre Group. The main dancer and choreographer of the video was Stanley Love, leader of the Brooklyn Stanley Love Performance Group.

The video is about melancholy inherent in dreams – says the director – and how recognizing dreams is what we need to be free. The people in the video are the citizens of the city of their dreams.

When asked about the prevailing message of her album, Mary underlines the cinematic quality of her music: “I know that a song is good, when I can imagine it as music for final credits in a film. When I write, I start with my memories. I’m trying to create a movie scene in my head, with me as the main character. And then I’m looking for a sentence, a word to build from. For example: “Come”, “Farewell”, “Don’t leave me here”, etc. This is where the story begins.
There are many of my own memories and experiences hidden in these lyrics. I’m trying to be honest with myself. The message of my album is that you are created by the experiences you had in your life, so don’t try to delete them from your system. Turn them into your strength.”
